Who Are the Millennials

Posted on February 6, 2012 by

Welcome to the Millennial Generation. The most educated and technologically advanced generation ever to exist on earth.  We are more ethnically and racially diverse that anyone before use.  Most of (75%) of us have created a profile on a social networking site. Sadly only 25% of us are religious, because we are not looking for rituals , we are looking for answers. Only 60% of us were raise by both parents and with the deterioration of the family we tend to stress parenthood and marriage above career and financial success. The third most important priority is the wellbeing of others because we have seen the devastating effects that greed can have on this world. We are the 14th generation since America got its independence from Britain, and we represent 26% of the population of the United States. We are larger than the baby boomers and 3 times the size of generation X. We belong to a generation that is heavily involved in team work,  we will work together to avert every crisis that comes our way. As we grow we will become strong leaders able to solve the problems we face. These daunting problems are; over population,  37% unemployment, exhausted resources, a bankrupt country and a dying planet. I have great confidence in our ability to overcome all these obstacles and anything else that comes our way.

The world population is now at 7 billion. The last billion in only the past 12 years.  It is predicted we will reach 8 billion within the next 8 years. We have the highest unemployment  of any group since the Great Depression. However, I believe with our educational background we will be able to reduce this number in half within the next 10 years. Oil, water and air are being depleted at a staggering rate, and chemicals being released into our atmosphere is so outrageous that every other person on earth will have cancer in our life time.

Our parents are just the opposite of who we are. In their teens and early twenties they spawned the sexual revolution and brought promiscuity to the forefront.  We have seen the hetero revolution, the Afro – American revolution, the women’s rights movement and now the homosexual revolution. The majority of us have maintained a moral ethic that has not been seen in a long time. Crime , drug and alcohol use are down in our generation. While our parents have spent us into oblivion and have left us with the bill, we, on the other hand, have mostly sat patiently waiting for our time to govern. There are a select few of us who have been protesting the financial slaughter of our future caused by the greed of Wall Street, however, I seriously doubt that these demonstrations will have any effect on the fat cats of this world.  With so many catastrophes awaiting us in our life time, where are we going to turn.

I am fully convinced that this world is ripe for revolution. I firmly believe that we are on the verge of worldwide revival. Not seen on this earth since the mid 1800’s, we as a generation have a unique personality that makes us creative, courageous and open – minded. These personality traits provide a platform on which we are capable of change.  Listening to and trying to understand new ideas in an old world gives us the opportunity to see old concepts in a new light.  An open mind allows for new ideas, and provides us a strong sense of self. It gives us an understanding of whatever truth we  might discover.

As a group I believe we have a rightly suited personality for a relationship with God. Our character traits as a whole are morally correct, loving our parents and caring for others makes us a natural fit for a relationship with Jesus Christ. I implore you if you have never studied the Word of God to do so now.  Open your mind to what the Bible has to offer you. Try to put aside all the negative connotations that are circulated in the media. We are at the age now to discard as accurate or inaccurate any beliefs we have inherited from our parents. It’s time for us to search the truth for ourselves. The Bible is an amazing document that has stood the test of time and deserves your careful consideration.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”Matthew 11:28-30 ESV

This generation founded  Christian rock. The past 10 years we have  filled auditoriums with names like Third Day, Mercy Me and Casting Crowns. These bands have exploded on the music chart waves, Christian rock  is the sixth most popular music in America today. Gospel outpaces sales of Latin, jazz, classical and new age. The music ministry is reaching thousands of people, however the separation between the Christian rock genre and the standard church is huge.  This gap leaves most of us high and dry, longing for a local outreach that we can call home. Those of us who have a Christian foundation generally go back to our home churches yearning for a complete spiritual understanding. The majority of us are left holding the bag because we haven’t any Biblical foundation to stand on.

We are a disconnected generation looking for a Christian leader who can relate to our spiritual needs. There is no typical belief system among Millennials, and most of us who call ourselves Christian do so because our parents did. One third of us say we have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, but only 15 percent of that one third say they read the Bible daily.  The majority of us are theistic, but struggle with basic Christian doctrine.

We believe that denominations and other religious labels are not important and that religion should address justice and equality. We are a new generation of Christians, and we have gone into several smaller movements that are influencing major congregations. We have a tremendous desire for therapeutic spirituality with a group of fellow believers that are like – minded. Just going to church and singing hymns isn’t enough. We want to go to church and commune with other people like a family.  We want to have coffee together, listen to live music together and not necessarily have the long drawn out preaching of a traditional church.  We want to learn about God in a small group setting and when we are all together we want to spend time in fellowship with one another. We are in search of a deeper understanding of the Word of God in this disconnected, complicated world.

The standard Christian sermon is the very thing that disconnects us from the mainstream church. We understand the message but we fail to feel the spiritual connection. You are not alone. God’s Word says,

For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.  1 Corinthians 1:21 ESV

God takes the foolish things of this world and uses them  as a stumbling block for the wise because,

But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, eventhings that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,  so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 ESV

My reversal of fortune is not to confuse you, it is not to create a warm and fuzzy world for you and then drop you off a cliff, but to challenge your mind to see the way that God sees. It is very important that you never get comfortable with your relationship with Jesus Christ. You can’t just assume a relationship is going well. You have to put time into it. Your relationship with God is an investment that not only pays dividends now but in the future. It is a daily paradoxical struggle with good and evil. To overcome this world we need a constant feeding of the Word of God. It is the only way that the Holy Spirit can do a good work through us.

So it is very important that you don’t get discouraged in your church life. Get a group of buddies together every Sunday and go check out a church.  I don’t want you to plan your trip to go to the morning service. I want you to go to Sunday school. That’s where you meet people. They are generally in small groups of people your age and you will be better able to understand what the church is all about through them . After all the church is not a building but a group of people.  If you can’t find a church you like please attend a Southern Baptist Church. Then invite your friends to come to church with you and consider joining it. Southern Baptist Churches are run by committees. They are not run by some diocese in some other state or country. They are not run by the pastor, although he does have an influence in what  direction the church heads. The Southern Baptist Church is run by its members. Every decision the church makes is made by committees. You, as a member of a Southern Baptist Church, have a voice. You are no longer on the outside looking in, you are on the inside making decisions that will affect the next generation that comes along. You will be creating the Church of God for your children. I promise you your turn to lead will come, but unless you get involved, the leadership is going to be left to someone else. A church is people who have a relationship with God.

So many people are confused about what a Christian is. You will ask, What is a Christian? And someone might say, “A Christian is a person who does good”, or they might say, “ A Christian is someone who believes in God or a person that goes to church.” All these things are true, but a sincere genuine Christian is a servant of Jesus Christ, and by serving others a Christian serves God.  You can just go out and start helping people, but to help people properly you have to be transformed into a like – minded follower of Jesus Christ. Paul said in Galatians 1:15-16,

“But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone.”

You have to sit down and start your own  Bible study program, A daily feeding of the  Word of God. Paul spent 3 years in the desert in prayer. He didn’t even have the Bible as we know it today. He simply spent time in prayer, study, and not a single human being revealed to him the New Testament church. He confided only in God. This is why there is such a spiritual vacuum in the world today. There is no preacher or teacher who can give you what you are looking for. No one can fill that emptiness inside of you except God. He is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through prayer and Bible study.
